Book Review: Undertow by Michael Buckley

Sixteen-year-old Lyric Walker’s life is forever changed when she witnesses the arrival of 30,000 Alpha, a five-nation race of ocean-dwelling warriors, on her beach in Coney Island. The world’s initial wonder and awe over the Alpha quickly turns ugly and paranoid and violent, and Lyric’s small town transforms into a military zone with humans on one side and Alpha on the other. When Lyric is recruited to help the crown prince, a boy named Fathom, assimilate, she begins to fall for him. But their love is a dangerous one, and there are forces on both sides working to keep them apart. Only, what if the Alpha are not actually the enemy? What if they are in fact humanity’s best chance for survival? Because the real enemy is coming. And it’s more terrifying than anything the world has ever seen.

This is the first book of the Undertow Series.  Can I just start off by saying that I hate reading brand new book series or trilogies because  when they are super good you have to wait a long time to get your hands on the second book.  Don’t get me wrong I love book series I just hate the long wait.  In this case the next book won’t be out until  February of 2016.   This is the only criticism I had of the book other then that I thought it was Amazing!  I first heard about this book on the book Riot Youtube channel.  It was one of the books they advertise before they get onto the topic of the video they are discussing. I found the summary intriguing and went ahead and got it at the library.  I am glad that I did.   It was about this girl whose family has secrets from their past. Which they are trying to hide from. Lyric ends up getting in the spotlight when she stands up For Fathom, who is one of the Alpha, who is being picked on.  Turns out Fathom is the Prince of the Alpha.  Lyric soon is ordered  by the Principal to make friends with Fathom.   She doesn’t want to at first, because the whole situation with her family, and anyone who hangs out with the Alpha are automatically in the spotlight.  Lyric starts teaching Fathom how to read.  Soon she starts to develop feelings for him,  but it torn due to the fact that no one would accept their relationship.  I am not sure if its Sci-fi or fantasy ?  But its a mixture that and retelling of  Romeo and Juliet.  Please pick this up you won’t regret it.
